The Saint-Lawrence Toastmasters club in Montreal is proud to welcome Erin and Gary as new members.

Erin Gary St-Lawrence Toastmasters MontrealMarc (VP Education) welcomes new members Gary and Erin

It is customary for us to ask new members if they can share some of the reasons that brought them to Toastmasters. Here is what they have to say:

I joined toastmasters to improve my public speaking skills. In my job as a campaign manager working in the animal protection field, being able to communicate clearly, efficiently and with confidence is crucial to my goal of creating positive change for animals.  I look forward to honing this skill with such a talented group of people and believe it will be extremely beneficial for me when acting as a media spokesperson, lobbying government officials or raising awareness in schools about the importance of treating animals with compassion.

                                                       Erin

I became a member of Toastmasters with the goal of developing into a proficient public speaker, capable of delivering everything from stand-up comedy to startup pitches, and lectures in a clear and engaging way. I am looking forward to growing alongside my fellow members over time. The St. Lawrence Toastmasters Club is arguably one of the finest places to hone our presentation skills, and I believe the work we are all putting in on Tuesday evenings is truly remarkable, and I am more than happy to be a part of it.

Sam_St-Lawrence_Toastmasters_MontrealMarc, VP Education, welcomes Sam to our Toastmasters club

We like to ask our new members to share some of the reasons that made them decide to join our club. Here is what Sam writes:

I joined Toastmasters with the goal of enhancing my presentation skills, mastering the art of storytelling, refining my impromptu speaking abilities, and developing my leadership skills.

I aspire to contribute to the growth and development of fellow club members by offering constructive feedback and actively participating in various roles, all while valuing our club’s warm atmosphere, punctuality, rich experience, and the supportive encouragement shared among members.

Are you also looking to enhance your presentation skills, master the art of storytelling, refine your impromptu speaking abilities, and develop your leadership skills? Come visit our Toastmasters club!

Here is the programme for the meeting of March 5, 2024.

When our current VP Membership, Veronica, joined the St-Lawrence Toastmasters Montreal Club in 2022, she initially found it challenging to understand the roles within our executive committee and to familiarize herself with each member.

In an effort to ensure all new members feel embraced, Veronica introduced a valuable initiative – the creation of a document titled ‘Meet our 2023-2024 Executive Committee!‘. This document provides insights into each committee member and the objectives they have given themselves for the club this year.

We even get a glimpse of Veronica herself:

Veronica joined Toastmasters to connect over our stories, our impassioned speeches, and a shared desire to continue to grow as people and as a community. She leads digital transformation and data management projects for small businesses and nonprofits.

Objectives this year: To create an environment where all members feel they have the space to develop and contribute their unique voice to our club. I strive to make sure that all guests who visit feel welcomed and included.

Come visit our club and see how our executive committee is helping our Toastmasters Club in Montreal to reach excellence in enabling all members to hone their public speaking and leadership skills.

Our Toastmasters club recently celebrated its 75th anniversary. In honor of this, Morag Mathieson (the current Toastmasters International President for 2023–2024) took a few minutes to warmly congratulate us for this great milestone.

After all, Toastmasters International oversees 14,200+ clubs throughout the world, so we are privileged that Morag took the time to send us her best wishes.

The St. Lawrence Toastmasters Club in Montreal can pride itself on a legacy of transformative growth and excellence in communication and leadership. With a history of maintaining a dynamic member base, emphasizing quality evaluations, and adapting to changes, the club has consistently upheld Toastmasters’ mission.

As a fully bilingual (English/French) club, St. Lawrence has garnered numerous accolades, including 90 ribbons as well as distinction in many district contests.

Members have not only benefitted from enhanced personal and professional communication skills but have also contributed positively to their wider community.

Our upcoming meetings on December 5 and December 12 will be unique and different from our regular weekly gatherings. These sessions will feature club contests, including the Toastmasters International Speech Contest and the Table Topics Contest.

These meetings might deviate from our typical Toastmasters format, but they promise to be captivating experiences. Let’s take a closer look at the Table Topics Contest:

Table Topics is designed to sharpen your skills in organizing thoughts swiftly and addressing impromptu questions or topics, as outlined on the Toastmasters International website.

During the contest, participants will be challenged to respond to an unexpected topic within 1 to 2 minutes. Here’s a summary of the key rules:

  1. Each contestant will be given the same general topic.
  2. The topic will be concise, not requiring specialized knowledge, and should prompt an opinion or conclusion.
  3. Contestants won’t know the topic until their turn, announced by the contest chair.
  4. All contestants, except the first, will leave the room at the start of the contest.
  5. Contestants will be introduced by stating their name, the topic, and then their name again.
  6. After each speech, the next contestant will be invited in.

What makes this contest particularly engaging for the audience is observing the variety of responses to the same question. It prompts us to reflect on how we might have answered and appreciate the unique approach of each contestant. This exercise allows us to learn indirectly how to refine our own impromptu speaking abilities.
