For the meeting of November 3, our member Italo Magni will exceptionally be giving a workshop (roughly 30 to 45 min) on the art of storytelling He will explain why storytelling is important for helping to give more effective speeches and will give examples to illustrate his point.
Feel free to come join us!
Here is the Toastmasters programme for the evening of November 3.

Congratulations to our member Ilya for reaching “Competent Communicator” status!
Club president Pier-Luc salutes Ilya on receiving his CC award
When members join Toastmasters, they are given a Competent Communication manual that contains 10 speech projects each focusing on a specific area, such as organizing your speech, using body language, vocal variety, visual aids, etc. At each speech, an evaluator offers constructive feedback, thereby helping the member to improve and to build on those skills.
(Want to know more about the 10 Competent Communicator projects? Here is a brief description of each project, as presented by a fellow Toastmasters club.)
Finally, after completing all ten speech projects, the member is given a Competent Communication award, which is exactly what Ilya earned this week!

The Saint-Lawrence Toastmasters Club in downtown Montreal would like to warmly welcome two new members.
Toastmasters club president Pier-Luc welcomes Jessica-Ruth and Justine
We always like to ask our new members why they joined Toastmasters and why they picked our club. Here are their responses:
“En tant que nouvelle entrepreneure, je veux développer l’art de bien parler en public et améliorer mon leadership. J’ai choisi le club St-Lawrence Toastmaster, car le niveau académique est excellent et les membres sont extrêmement accueillants.”
– Jessica-Ruth
“I came because I wanted to overcome my discomfort with public speaking. I stayed because I am inspired by the opportunity to better myself and develop my skills. What better motivation to succeed than to be surrounded by the talented people of the St. Lawrence Toastmasters?”
– Justine
Welcome to our club, and we look forward to helping you reach your goals!

“To better my communication skills as a leader, I knew instinctively that I could depend on the experienced members of St-Lawrence Toastmasters. Quel plaisir de communiquer dans les deux langues!”
– Fatima
“I joined Toastmasters because I want to strongly improve the quality of my presentations in English and also because I believe that the best way to develop interpersonal skills is to work with others who share common interests.”
– Louis

You might be interested to know that the meeting of June 9 is a special meeting not like our usual weekly meetings. We will be holding a club contest (i.e. humorous speech contests and evaluation contests).
Although it won’t be in the standard weekly meeting format, it’s still quite interesting to check out. For example, this is how the evaluation contest usually unfolds:
- There will be a target speaker (i.e. someone presents a speech, and this person has been selected secretly beforehand to prepare a target speech to give for the purposes of the contest). All of the audience will get to hear and appreciate the speech. The evaluators will all be evaluating the same speech.
- Then the contestants (the evaluators) will be asked to leave the room and take a few minutes to prepare their evaluation notes.
- The Sergeant-at-Arms collects all the notes, which will be handed back to each evaluator as he/she comes back into the room to present his/her evaluation. (The order of evaluation will have been been previously determined by drawing straws.)
- Each evaluator has a chance to give an evaluation, making sure to provide constructive feedback to the target speaker and making sure to speak within the allotted time.
- Finally, what makes it quite interesting for the audience members is that we get to have a sense of the different evaluation styles and we notice what the evaluators pick out in common as well as any special points that each individual evaluator may have noticed that the other evaluators have not mentioned. This give us the opportunity to compare to what we would have said ourselves had we been asked to evaluate the target speaker. This is a great learning experience because it allows us to, in a sort of way, “learn through osmosis”.
