Note: The contest was originally set to begin at 6:30 PM. However, due to the large number of participants, the organizers have adjusted the starting time of the event to 5:30 PM. This change helps ensure there will be sufficient time to accommodate everyone and maintain a good flow for the contest.

Our upcoming meeting on November 26, 2024, will be an extraordinary event as we host our annual club contests. We’re excited to feature both a French speech contest and an English evaluation contest.

While this meeting won’t follow our typical weekly format, it promises to be an engaging and educational experience.

Let’s take a closer look at how the Evaluation Contest is expected to unfold:

1. A pre-selected target speaker will deliver a prepared speech for the audience and contestants to analyze.
2. Following the speech, the evaluator contestants will be given time outside the room to prepare their notes.
3. Our Sergeant-at-Arms will collect these notes, returning them to each evaluator as they re-enter to present their evaluation.
4. Evaluators will present their feedback in a predetermined order, offering constructive criticism to the target speaker within a specified time frame.

What makes this contest particularly fascinating for audience members is the opportunity to observe diverse evaluation styles. You’ll notice common themes among evaluators, as well as unique insights that individual contestants may highlight. This allows you to mentally compare your own observations with those presented, creating a rich learning environment through what we might call "passive participation."

La réunion du mardi 19 novembre 2024 s’annonce exceptionnelle pour notre club Toastmasters à Montréal. Nous aurons le plaisir d’organiser deux concours passionnants ce soir-là : un concours de discours en anglais et un concours d’évaluation en français.

Bien que le format diffère de nos réunions hebdomadaires habituelles, assister à ces concours est une expérience enrichissante.

Prenons l’exemple du concours d’évaluation de discours :

• Un orateur cible, choisi discrètement à l’avance, présentera un discours préparé. L’ensemble de l’auditoire, y compris les concurrents évaluateurs, écoutera attentivement ce discours.
• Les évaluateurs disposeront ensuite d’un bref moment, hors de la salle, pour préparer leurs notes d’évaluation.
• À leur retour, ils présenteront leurs évaluations dans un ordre tiré au sort, en s’efforçant de fournir un retour constructif à l’orateur cible tout en respectant le temps imparti.
• Pour le public, c’est l’occasion d’observer différents styles d’évaluation, de noter les points communs relevés par tous les évaluateurs, mais aussi de constater les observations uniques de chacun.
• Cette expérience nous pousse à réfléchir à notre propre analyse du discours, favorisant ainsi un apprentissage par immersion.
• Le concours de discours en anglais promet également d’être captivant, mettant en lumière les talents oratoires de nos membres dans une langue différente.

Ces concours sont une excellente opportunité pour nos membres de mettre en pratique leurs compétences, de relever de défis personnels et de progresser dans l’art de la communication.

Our upcoming meetings on December 5 and December 12 will be unique and different from our regular weekly gatherings. These sessions will feature club contests, including the Toastmasters International Speech Contest and the Table Topics Contest.

These meetings might deviate from our typical Toastmasters format, but they promise to be captivating experiences. Let’s take a closer look at the Table Topics Contest:

Table Topics is designed to sharpen your skills in organizing thoughts swiftly and addressing impromptu questions or topics, as outlined on the Toastmasters International website.

During the contest, participants will be challenged to respond to an unexpected topic within 1 to 2 minutes. Here’s a summary of the key rules:

1. Each contestant will be given the same general topic.
2. The topic will be concise, not requiring specialized knowledge, and should prompt an opinion or conclusion.
3. Contestants won’t know the topic until their turn, announced by the contest chair.
4. All contestants, except the first, will leave the room at the start of the contest.
5. Contestants will be introduced by stating their name, the topic, and then their name again.
6. After each speech, the next contestant will be invited in.

What makes this contest particularly engaging for the audience is observing the variety of responses to the same question. It prompts us to reflect on how we might have answered and appreciate the unique approach of each contestant. This exercise allows us to learn indirectly how to refine our own impromptu speaking abilities.

The St-Lawrence Toastmasters club is proud to congratulate its members Yanick and Caroline for their success at the Toastmasters District 61 Contests!

Yanick won first place in the French Evaluation contest, and Caroline came in second in the French Speech contest.

Le club St-Lawrence à Montréal est fier de féliciter ses membres Joëlle, Caroline, Yanick et Italo, qui ont tous gagné la première place lors des concours de secteur qui ont eu lieu le 25 janvier 2023.

Notre club fait partie du secteur 62, qui regroupe plusieurs clubs. Chaque année des concours amicaux sont organisés entre les clubs du même secteur. Les concours qui ont eu lieu récemment étaient des concours d’évaluation (un en anglais, et un en français), ainsi que des concours de discours (un en anglais, et un en français).

La réunion du mardi 15 novembre sera une soirée spéciale à notre club Toastmasters à Montréal. Nous organiserons un concours de discours (anglais) ainsi qu’un concours d’évaluation (français).

Bien que la soirée ne sera pas dans le format standard de nos réunions hebdomadaires, c’est toujours très intéressant d’y assister. Par exemple, voici comment se déroule habituellement un concours d’évaluation de discours :

• Il y aura un orateur cible (c’est à dire quelqu’un qui donnera un discours, et cette personne aura été choisie secrètement à l’avance pour préparer un discours pour ce concours). Tout l’auditoire aura l’occasion d’entendre le discours, incluant les concurrents (les évaluateurs) qui évalueront tous ce même discours.
• Ensuite, les évaluateurs seront invités à quitter la salle et à prendre quelques minutes pour préparer leurs notes d’évaluation.

• Le huissier recueillera ensuite toutes les notes, qui seront remises à chaque évaluateur quand il / elle revient dans la salle pour présenter son évaluation. (L’ordre d’évaluation aura préalablement été déterminé au sort.)
• Chaque évaluateur donnera son évaluation, en veillant à fournir une rétroaction constructive à l’orateur cible et en s’assurant de respecter les contraintes de temps allouées pour une évaluation de discours.
• Enfin, ce qui peut surtout intéresser les membres de l’auditoire, c’est de voir les styles différents d’évaluation qu’il peut y avoir. Cela nous permet aussi de noter ce que les évaluateurs ont tous choisi d’évaluer en commun ainsi que les points particuliers que chaque évaluateur individuel a remarqué que les autres évaluateurs n’ont peut-être pas mentionné. Finalement, de manière indirecte, cela nous fait aussi penser au points que nous aurions soulevés si nous avions aussi fait une évaluation du discours. C’est une expérience très enrichissante car elle nous permet de sorte, «d’apprendre par osmose».

Félicitations aux participants et aux gagnants la semaine dernière lors des concours de discours (français) et d’évaluation (anglais)!

The meeting of November 8, 2022 will be a special meeting, since we will be holding a club contest (i.e. French speech contest, as well as the English evaluation contest).

Although it won’t be in the standard weekly meeting format, it’s still quite interesting to check out. For example, this is how an Evaluation Contest usually unfolds:

• There will be a target speaker (i.e. someone presents a speech, and this person has been selected beforehand to prepare a target speech to give for the purposes of the contest). All of the audience will get to hear and appreciate the speech. The evaluators will all be evaluating the same speech.
• The contestants (the evaluators) will then be asked to leave the room and take a few minutes to prepare their evaluation notes.
• The Sergeant-at-Arms collects all the notes, which will be handed back to each evaluator as he/she comes back into the room to present his/her evaluation. (The order of evaluation will have been been previously determined by drawing straws.)
• Each evaluator has a chance to give his/her evaluation, making sure to provide constructive feedback to the target speaker and making sure to speak within the allotted time.
• Finally, what makes it quite interesting for the audience members is that we get to have a sense of the different evaluation styles and we notice what the evaluators pick out in common as well as any special points that each individual evaluator may have noticed that the other evaluators have not mentioned. This give us the opportunity to compare to what we would have said ourselves had we been asked to evaluate the target speaker. This is a great learning experience because it allows us to, in a sort of way, “learn through osmosis”.
