The St. Lawrence Toastmasters Club Montreal would like to wish a warm welcome to two new members.
Toastmasters club president Pier-Luc welcomes Katherine and Armel
Here is why Katherine came to Toastmasters:
“I joined Toastmasters to become more comfortable with public speaking, particularly in impromptu situations, and also work on being more concise and to the point. In just the few meetings I’ve attended, the level of organization, efficiency and support at the St. Lawrence Toastmasters meetings has far exceeded my expectations. I’m looking forward to my journey with this club!”
Armel visited our club on a couple of occasions before joining. In fact, it was a year ago that he visited our club for the first time. However, due to scheduling of other activities, he was not able to join us at that time. This year he made sure to plan his schedule so that he could attend our meetings. Here is what he had to say:
“J’ai toujours aimé la communication orale en public. J’ai donc décidé cette année d’intégrer un club Toastmaster afin de m’y dédier efficacement dans un envirronment encadré.
Toastmasters St-Lawrence est mon choix car le palmarès de ce club et la chaleur de ses réunions m’ont séduites.”
All the best to our two new members!

Feel free to come meet us too! Here is the programme for the meeting of October 13, 2015.
The Saint-Lawrence Toastmasters Club in downtown Montreal would like to warmly welcome two new members.
Toastmasters club president Pier-Luc welcomes Jessica-Ruth and Justine
We always like to ask our new members why they joined Toastmasters and why they picked our club. Here are their responses:
“En tant que nouvelle entrepreneure, je veux développer l’art de bien parler en public et améliorer mon leadership. J’ai choisi le club St-Lawrence Toastmaster, car le niveau académique est excellent et les membres sont extrêmement accueillants.”
– Jessica-Ruth
“I came because I wanted to overcome my discomfort with public speaking. I stayed because I am inspired by the opportunity to better myself and develop my skills. What better motivation to succeed than to be surrounded by the talented people of the St. Lawrence Toastmasters?”
– Justine
Welcome to our club, and we look forward to helping you reach your goals!

“To better my communication skills as a leader, I knew instinctively that I could depend on the experienced members of St-Lawrence Toastmasters. Quel plaisir de communiquer dans les deux langues!”
– Fatima
“I joined Toastmasters because I want to strongly improve the quality of my presentations in English and also because I believe that the best way to develop interpersonal skills is to work with others who share common interests.”
– Louis

After a nice summer break, our Toastmasters meetings resume on Tuesday September 8. Please feel free to come visit us to find out more about how Toastmasters can help you become a more effective communicator and improve your leadership skills.
Please note that the meeting of June 16, 2015 will be the last meeting before we (the St-Lawrence Toastmasters Club) take a break for the summer.
Exceptionally, the meeting will be held in the Banquet Hall (across the parking lot).
Here is the Toastmasters programme for the meeting of June 16.
You might be interested to know that the meeting of June 9 is a special meeting not like our usual weekly meetings. We will be holding a club contest (i.e. humorous speech contests and evaluation contests).
Although it won’t be in the standard weekly meeting format, it’s still quite interesting to check out. For example, this is how the evaluation contest usually unfolds:
- There will be a target speaker (i.e. someone presents a speech, and this person has been selected secretly beforehand to prepare a target speech to give for the purposes of the contest). All of the audience will get to hear and appreciate the speech. The evaluators will all be evaluating the same speech.
- Then the contestants (the evaluators) will be asked to leave the room and take a few minutes to prepare their evaluation notes.
- The Sergeant-at-Arms collects all the notes, which will be handed back to each evaluator as he/she comes back into the room to present his/her evaluation. (The order of evaluation will have been been previously determined by drawing straws.)
- Each evaluator has a chance to give an evaluation, making sure to provide constructive feedback to the target speaker and making sure to speak within the allotted time.
- Finally, what makes it quite interesting for the audience members is that we get to have a sense of the different evaluation styles and we notice what the evaluators pick out in common as well as any special points that each individual evaluator may have noticed that the other evaluators have not mentioned. This give us the opportunity to compare to what we would have said ourselves had we been asked to evaluate the target speaker. This is a great learning experience because it allows us to, in a sort of way, “learn through osmosis”.
