Come attend the St-Lawrence Toastmasters meeting of Tuesday February 4 as it will be a special meeting not like our usual weekly meetings. We will be holding a club contest (i.e. International Speech contest and Table Topics contest).

Although it won’t be in the standard weekly Toastmasters meeting format, it will nevertheless be quite interesting to check out. For example, this is how the Table Topics contest usually unfolds:

Table Topics is about developing your ability to organize your thoughts quickly and respond to an impromptu question or topic (as described on the Toastmasters International website).

In this contest, the contestants will have 1 to 2 minutes to provide an answer to a topic given to them “on the spot”.  Here is an excerpt of the rules:

  1. All contestants shall receive the same topic, which shall be of a general nature.
  2. The topic shall be of reasonable length, shall not require a detailed knowledge, and shall lead to an opinion or conclusion.
  3. Contestants will receive no advance knowledge of the topic until the moment they are introduced by the contest chair.
  4. When the contest begins, all contestants except the first shall leave the room.
  5. Introduce each contestant by announcing the contestant’s name, the topic, the topic, the contestant’s name.
  6. At the conclusion of each speech, the next speaker shall be invited into the room.

What makes it interesting for us as audience members is that we get to hear different answers to one same topic question.  We will perhaps imagine, “If I had been asked that question, how would I have answered it?”, which can lead to an ever greater appreciation of how each contestant answers the question.  We’ll probably also pick out the common points between each contestant’s answer, as well as marvel at hearing any specific or particular points that make each answer stand out.  This is a great learning experience because it allows us to, in a sort of indirect way, “learn through osmosis”.

Here is the program of the evening.  Good luck to all the contestants!

P.S. And for the contestants, here is a useful post on Tips for preparing for Toastmasters Table Topics.

Here is an invitation from the Dorval City Toastmasters Club, one of our fellow Toastmasters clubs in Montreal.

Annual Tall Tales Extravaganza

Dorval-Toastmasters-Tall-Tales-Trophy

On Saturday February 8th 2014 we will be holding our annual Tall Tales Extravaganza at the Taormina Lounge in Lachine. I would like to extend an invitation to your members and their family and friends.

This event is open to all, Toastmasters and non-Toastmasters. During the event a meal will be served. There will be a Tall Tales contest where contestants present a highly exaggerated and humorous story. This has always been a fun event and it is an opportunity for experienced toastmasters to compete for a trophy and for all to learn from great talent.

If any of your members are interested in being a contestant or attending please have them contact me for tickets and information. The cost of the event is $36 which includes taxes and tips.

Please consult the flyer for the annual Tall Tales Extravaganza for additional information.

Regards,

Elias Elahie
Toastmaster at Dorval City Toastmasters Club

Dear Toastmasters members and friends,

Please note that we are currently taking a break during the Holiday season.

We’ll be back in full swing starting Tuesday January 7, 2014.

Until then, enjoy the following video on Vimeo from Bas Manders:

We recently had two members join our St-Lawrence Toastmasters Club in Montreal.  John and Pier-Luc both started visiting our club roughly around the same time, and they each quickly came to see that Toastmasters could help them reach their goals.

As John mentions, “The main reason I joined Toastmasters is to  break down the wall of fear which presents itself whenever I have to speak in front of several people, to be more confident, and at ease.  I’ve been to 3 meetings and am enjoying the atmosphere, the talks, and my fellow toastmasters, they are all wonderful people. I am already looking forward to the next meeting!”

St-Lawrence Toastmasters Pier-Luc-John Brown

Dear members and Toastmasters friends,

Can you believe that our club is already 65 years old?  As a matter of fact, the St. Lawrence Toastmasters Club is the oldest Toastmasters club east of Windsor, Ontario.  We like to playfully boast that since we are the oldest club, then naturally we are the most experienced club as well Smile

To celebrate our 65th anniversary, we will have a special evening on Saturday November 23, 2013 at the Restaurant L’Ambroisie.  Be sure to reserve early as we only have a 70-person maximum capacity!

We recently welcomed a new member to our Toastmasters club in Montreal.  Margaret discovered Toastmasters at the suggestion of her radio producer who mentioned it in one of their conversations.

Martina (club president) welcomes our new Toastmasters member Margaret

Since Margaret wants to share and inspire her audience with modern and ancient techniques for living life to its fullest at any age, she feels that Toastmasters will provide her the necessary skills to be able to effectively communicate with ease and grace, and to present in a manner that will be simple to understand and easy to remember.
